Microsoft Copilot and Bing Chat Are Getting GPT-4 Turbo

LLMs like those developed by OpenAI are trained on massive datasets scraped from the Internet and licensed from media companies, enabling them to respond to user prompts in a human-like manner. Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s current lead in the benchmark performance race could soon evaporate. So, ChatGPT-5 may include more safety and privacy features than previous models. For instance, OpenAI will probably improve the guardrails that prevent people from misusing ChatGPT to create things like inappropriate or potentially dangerous content.

That kind of stability can be crucial for critical and widely used applications, where reliability might be a higher priority than having the lowest costs or the latest features​. Both models are trained to generate natural-sounding text in response to users’ prompts, and they can engage in interactive, back-and-forth conversations, retaining memory and context to inform future responses. Since OpenAI first launched ChatGPT in late 2022, the chatbot interface and its underlying models have already undergone several major changes.

The current-gen GPT-4 model already offers speech and image functionality, so video is the next logical step. The company also showed off a text-to-video AI tool called Sora in the following weeks. OpenAI is forming a Collective Alignment team of researchers and engineers to create a system for collecting and “encoding” public input on its models’ behaviors into OpenAI products and services. This comes as a part of OpenAI’s public program to award grants to fund experiments in setting up a “democratic process” for determining the rules AI systems follow. In a new partnership, OpenAI will get access to developer platform Stack Overflow’s API and will get feedback from developers to improve the performance of their AI models. In return, OpenAI will include attributions to Stack Overflow in ChatGPT.

The company said that nearly half of OpenAI’s corporate users are based in the US. Unlike ChatGPT, o1 can’t browse the web or analyze files yet, is rate-limited and expensive compared to other models. OpenAI says it plans to bring o1-mini access to all free users of ChatGPT, but hasn’t set a release date. At the first of its 2024 Dev Day events, OpenAI announced a new API tool that will let developers build nearly real-time, speech-to-speech experiences in their apps, with the choice of using six voices provided by OpenAI.

Altman and OpenAI have also been somewhat vague about what exactly ChatGPT-5 will be able to do.
